It really depends on whether you want to pay for personal advice, or not.

I use an online broker (CommSec or Nabtrade) because I have not found a stockbroker who knows any more than I do, or at least, I felt could add much value. So, I prefer to pay lower brokerage rates and transact directly.

On the other hand, I have friends who have a stockbroker and they are very happy with the advice and service they receive – and are happy paying a premium for this.

One word of caution – if you planning to use a stockbroker, they will be more interested in you if you have a bigger portfolio of shares.
