Can you name any energy EFT available through the ASX? I have looked but have been unable to find any.
A: Thanks for the question.
Locally, there are 2 ETFs listed on the ASX:
- Betashares 000 – a currency hedged ETF aiming to track the S&P GSCI Crude Oil Index Excess Return (ASX Code OOO).
- Betashares QCB – a currency hedged ETF aiming to track the S&P GSCI Light Energy Index Excess Return (ASX Code QCB). This index cover a basket of 24 commodities – with energy currently weighting at around 39%.
On overseas markets, there are tens of Energy ETFs. Here are the 10 of the leading ETFs trading in the USA:
XLE
Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund
VDE
Vanguard Energy Index Fund
XOP
SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF
IYE
iShares Dow Jones US Energy Sector Index Fund
IXC
iShares S&P Global Energy Sector Index Fund
OIH
Market Vectors Oil Services ETF
IEO
iShares Dow Jones US Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Index Fund
IEZ
iShares Dow Jones US Oil Equipment & Services Index Fund
FXN
First Trust Energy AlphaDEX Fund
FCG
First Trust ISE Revere Natural Gas Index Fund
As to which country, if you can trade in the USA, I would take an ETF listed in the USA and covering one of the major oil benchmarks (eg. WTI or Brent).
Hope this helps.
