HVST ETF

I have been told to look at HVST as a play for my SMSF. It is run by Beta Shares and is promoted as a dividend harvest fund. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

A: HVST is a new ETF, only commencing in October 14. As such, there really isn’t much of a track record to scrutinize.

It has an interesting investment objective, which says:

“The Fund aims to provide investors with exposure to large capitalisation Australian shares along with regular franked dividend income, paid monthly, that is at least double the annual income yield of the broad Australian sharemarket. In addition, the Fund aims to reduce the volatility of equity investment returns and cushion downside risk.”

I am a bit puzzled by the “double” part. As the weighted average ASX dividend yield is around 4.5%, this implies an income yield objective of almost 9.0%.

The fund would appear to be largely tracking the ASX 50, and has a GICS sector weighting that very closely matches the market. That said, it doesn’t specifically track any index.

The management fee of 0.65% is high for an ETF.

Hope this helps.
