Transurban has confirmed the NSW government will go ahead with a major upgrade of the M5 toll road in Sydney’s south west.

Transurban has a 50 per cent stake in Interlink Roads, which operates the M5, a 22 kilometre toll road from Prestons to Beverly Hills.

Interlink has signed an in principle agreement with the NSW government to add one lane in each direction along the M5.

The project will cost $400 million, of which $50 million will be paid for by the NSW government.

Construction work is expected to begin in mid-2012, Transurban said.

Tolls for cars using the road will not change, while tolls for trucks will increase from 2.2 times the car toll rate to three times the car toll rate.
