Stocks to watch on the Australian stock exchange on Tuesday:

LEI – LEIGHTON HOLDINGS LTD – up 23 cents at $21.25

Leighton Holdings subsidiary Thiess has won a $140 million contract with Australia’s largest electricity distributor Ausgrid to drill a 3.2km tunnel under Sydney’s central business district.

NWS – NEWS CORPORATION LTD – up 12 cents at $17.64

NWSLV – NEWS CORPORATION LTD NON VOTING SHARES – up one cent at $17.13

News Ltd chief operating officer Peter Macourt is leaving the media company at the end of the year.

Mr Macourt had been responsible for overall management of News Ltd’s complex and diverse operations for the past decade, chief executive Kim Williams said on Monday.

ORG – ORIGIN ENERGY LTD – up 43 cents at $14.72

China Petrochemical Corp (Sinopec) has increased its stake in Origin Energy and US giant ConocoPhillips’ Australia Pacific liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.

QAN – QANTAS AIRWAYS LTD – down 0.5 cents at $1.585

Qantas is continuing with plans to establish a premium Asian airline despite its own gloomy outlook for the global economy.

WES – WESFARMER LTD – down 58 cents at $30.90

Wesfarmers anticipates a $190 million writedown in its Coregas business as a result of amendments to its contracts with BlueScope Steel.

WHC – WHITEHAVEN COAL LTD – down eight cents at $5.74

AZT – ASTON RESOURCES LTD – up 14 cents at $9.90

Whitehaven Coal will buy billionaire Nathan Tinkler’s Aston Resources to form Australia’s largest independent coal company worth $5.1 billion. .
