Miners drive share market up

The share market is buoyant at noon after jumping steeply during early trade.

Strong gains were made by the miners, with BHP Billiton leaping 3.63 per cent to $25.15 while rival miner Rio Tinto added 2.4 per cent to $53.43.

Energy stocks were also strong, with Santos surging 7.69 per cent to $5.54 off the back of a pleasing drill report.

The big four lenders were also stronger at noon.

KEY FACTS

* At 1207 AEDT on Wednesday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 44.9 points, or 0.86 per cent, at 5,242.9 points.

* The broader All Ordinaries index was up 44 points, or 0.84 per cent, at 5,272.4 points.

* The December share price index futures contract was up 38 points at 5,226 points, with 14,923 contracts traded.

* National turnover was 844 million securities worth $2.3 billion.
