Partial commutations

Does the partial commutation work by the SMSF making an off market transfer of $60,000 worth of shares to the beneficiary’s private share account?

Portfolio review – shares vs. cash

We are retired and have an SMSF worth about $1 million. We have 80% in shares and 20% in income securities. We have a total of nine holdings, including banks, Telstra, BHP, Woodside etc. and are both 70.

We recently sold NAB and Wesfarmers and bought BOQ and more Telstra. We have a stockbroker for these trades and it was on his suggestion that we sold. What is your view on the number of holdings and percentage of shares versus cash?

Increase to superannuation guarantee

I was hoping you may have a better understanding of the new increase to the superannuation guarantee.

My son works for a large company who classifies him as a “Freelancer”.

His previous payslips show a Weekly Gross amount as agreed upon (based on a daily rate x 5) – less tax = Net, and then an additional Super amount based on 9.25% of his Gross figure.

He does not receive any sick or annual leave entitlements. Since the increase to 9.5% his net has decreased, and he tells me this is because of the new Super change!

I believe that if his Super was calculated on the gross previously (not Gross including Super) then that is how it should remain. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Super administration

In a recent edition of Cuffelinks, there was reference to companies that provide help with administering SMSFs.

The ones named were Class Super, BGL, Super IQ and Supermate.

I run a $3m fund with diverse investments ranging from ASX listed securities, FIIG bonds, property development syndicates, property syndicates and unlisted trusts.

End-of-year scrambling around to provide information to my accountant is hard work, even though I keep good records. Can Switzer Super recommend one of the named companies? I need a service that’s easy for a non-accountant to use.

Can you help with this issue?

NAB vs CBA

Paul,

Interested in your thoughts as to NAB “outperforming” against the other big banks – Charlie Aitken’s article on NAB was interesting, and I would be interested in whether you still see CBA as the best of the big 4.
